Very healthy yet delicious rice dish, with tangy flavor of tomatoes. You'll be playing the rice card!

1.In a large kadai heat oil and add 1/4 tsp mustard seeds, 1 tsp channa dal, 1 tsp urad dal and saute it for a few seconds, once the dal changes its color add 1 tsp fennel seeds and few curry leaves .

2. Now, add 1 large sliced onion , some salt and cook until the onions turns soft.

3. Further, add 3 green chilies, 1 tsp ginger garlic paste and the masalas – 1/2 tsp turmeric powder, 1.5 tsps red chili powder and 1/2 tsp garam masala powder (ginger garlic paste and garam masala adds more taste to the tomato rice and it tastes like biryani)

4. Mix once and then add 3 chopped tomatoes, cover and cook until oil oozes out from the mixture. once the tomatoes become soft mash it with a spoon so that everything turns into a paste. stir them in between to prevent the mixture from burning.

5. Once the oil oozes out add ghee to enhance the taste and flavor of the tomato rice and turn off the heat.

6. Finally, add the coked rice and mix well. this mixture will be sufficient for 3/4 – 1 cup of rice (before cooking). if you are not sure about the amount then take a bowl of cooked rice and add mixture little at a time and mix well.


That's it our thakkai sadam / tomato rice is ready to be enjoyed with raitha and vadagam. it tastes more or less like a plain biryani because of the ginger garlic paste and the garam masala. you can store the thokku for 2 days in the refrigerator.
