An Indian lentil-based curry originating from Hyderabad, Combination of yellow lentils and bengal gram lentil cooked with mutton pieces and flavored with Mughlai spices makes a unique and flavorful side dish.

bengal gram
bottle gourd
turmeric powder
caraway seeds
cinnamon stick
green cardamom
ginger-garlic paste
red chilli powder
coriander powder
green chilli
garam masala powder
coriander leaves
coriander sprig


1. Pressure cook 1 cup bengal gram in 1/4 tsp turmeric powder and salt to taste in sufficient water for 2 to 3 whistles.

2. Heat 3 tbsp ghee and 2 tbsp oil in another pressure cooker. add 1 tsp caraway seeds and sauté till seeds change colour.

3. Add 1.5 inch cinnamon stick, 8 to 10 green cardamoms, 8 to 10 cloves and 2 finely chopped medium onions. mix and sauté till onions are well browned.

4. Add 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste and cook till raw smell goes. add 500 gms mutton and mix. add 2 medium size chopped tomatoes and stir.

5. Add 1 tbsp red chilli powder, remaining 1/4 tsp turmeric powder, 1 tbsp coriander powder and salt as per taste. mix well and cook for 2-3 minutes.

6. Add 4 tbsp yogurt and mix well. add 3 to 4 green chillies and sufficient water. cover and pressure cook for 4 to 5 whistles.

7. To this add 100 gms bottle gourd cut into large pieces and the cooked bengal gram. mix well, cover and pressure cook for 2 to 3 whistles.

8. Add 1 tbsp garam masala powder and 1 tbsp lemon juice, stir to mix and simmer for 2-3 minutes. add 1 tsp chopped coriander leaves and mix well.

9. Garnish with coriander sprig and serve hot.
