It's an almost everyday menu in most Bengali households. Masoor dal (orange lentils) are widely consumed among the Bengalis. Rich in proteins, fibres, vitamins and other essential nutrients, this has a widespread health benefit. Though it may cause allergic reactions to some people with severe allergy, but overall it has a great nutritional value. Though, it has a variety of recipes, but this particular recipe is one of my favourites on a hectic and tiring day.

Instructions

1. Wash the dal properly and add 1 cup water and boil it in a pressure cooker. (don't overcook the dal. for me, i kept upto 1 whistle putting the flame on medium low.)

2. Wait till the pressure releases, add the remaining water and mix the dal with a whisk.

3. In a heavy bottomed pan, add mustard oil.

4. Add panch foran, dry red chilli and bay leaves.

5. Add the onion and fry on medium low flame till browned.

6. Add the boiled dal and add salt and turmeric powder to it.

7. Give it a nice boil for 2-3 mins.

8. Check for salt and adjust as per your taste.

9. Serve hot with rice, alu posto or any side dish.
